How does agile working impact on the culture in your business?

It feels like talk about Agile working is everywhere at the moment. In a bid to reduce office space, realise the potential of technology and enable people to work in flexible ways that will increase their productivity, many businesses are experimenting with more agile ways of working.

Our topic at The Institute for Organisational Development for People, Performance and Organisational Development this month is culture.

Culture – The core values that act as guiding principles for an organisation.

It got me thinking about the effect agile working has on culture within businesses. Consider just a few changes that agile working brings, such as:

– Day long meetings and pages of minutes giving way to cloud based shared working spaces and daily scrum meetings (sometimes while planking…it’s one way to keep your meetings short! – It’s a thing…google it!)

– From everyone being in the office together from 9am – 5pm, to flexibility in the hours we work and the location of the places we work from. This leads to a greater focus on our output rather than number of hours worked

– The traditional hierarchical, command and control structures makes way for leaders who need to delegate responsibility and decision-making across the business, requiring a greater degree of trust in others.

All of these have a huge effect on the culture we work in.

An effect that is important to keep discussing with people and working to understand and agree ‘the way things get done around here’

It’s up to the people within a business to create this culture and then live it.
